Default What's Your Top 10 Favorite Christmas Movies?

Here's mine in no particular order (Revised Edition):

1. The Ref - Totally raw Denis Leary as a cat burglar who takes a family hostage on Christmas + the late great director Ted Demme = one of the best Christmas comedies EVER.

2. Ernest Saves Christmas - Sure you might lose a few brain cells from watching, but its worth it.

3. The Hebrew Hammer - Part man. Part street. 100% kosher. Imagine a Jewish Shaft who's who goes on a mission to save Hanukkah from a ruthless Santa Claus played by......Andy Dick. And be sure to watch Mario Van Peebles character "Mohammed Ali Paula Abdul Rahiem" which is sort of a tribute role to his father's (Melvin Van Peebles) blacksploitation films. Shabbat Shalom! Obviously this doesn't qualify as your typical "Christmas film" in the normal sense, but you don't have to be Jewish (or gentile) to enjoy its greatness. Adam Goldberg says a sequel may be in the works! FYI, skip seeing it on Comedy Central and watch the uncensored widescreen DVD instead.

4. Bad Santa - A drunk conman Santa who just doesn't give a damn and his midget sidekick "elf" make for one of the best adult-oriented Christmas comedies to come along in awhile. And the unrated "Bad(der) Santa" is even better, IMHO.

5. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Sure there are quite a few people out there who don't care for Chevy Chase (at all)...but, even the biggest CC haters will agree this film is a comedy classic not to be missed during the holidays.

6. Gremlins - How can you not like the movie that spawned countless imitators like "Critters" and "Ghoulies"? This is the original (and best) critters from hell comedy horror films directed by Joe (The Howling) Dante that just so happens to take place on Christmas.

7. It's a Wonderful Life - Why watch some overrated sappy holiday flick when you can watch a "wonderfully" acted classic directed by Frank Capra himself that also happens to be one of the best films ever made?

8. Die Hard - Yes, it's a Christmas movie. It's a guy's Christmas action movie. Same goes to part 2 only to a lesser extent.

9. A Christmas Story - "You'll put your eye out kid!" I'm sure many here have seen the 24 hour marathons on TBS/TNT countless times over the years. And if you want to see it in the original widescreen aspect ratio as it's meant to be seen, TCM usually plays it....or just pick up the damn DVD already like I did!

10. Scrooged - A Modern dark-comedy retelling (1988 modern anyway) of the classic "Christmas Carol" story with Bill Murray as a miserable TV exec who is visitied by 3....you know the rest. SIRIUS's own David Johansen is the Ghost of Christmas past and Carol Kane as a ball-busting Ghost of Chritmas present. Of the 10,000 versions of this story out there, this one really stands out as the best.

Honorable mentions
Action - Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Batman Returns
Classic - Miracle on 34th Street (The original)
Comedy - Elf, Home Alone 1 & 2. Seeing Marv and Harry being caught on fire and hit in the nuts is still funny for some reason.
Romantic Comedy - Love Actually. Some might consider it a "chick flick" but I think it's a great feel-good Christmas movie for girls and guys alike.

Probably not the most traditional Christmas list. And no disrespect to some of the classics its just after countless viewings you tend to want something a little different.

Now, what's yours?

"National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"
"Home Alone"
"Elf"
"Uncle Buck"

All great Chistmas movies.

Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse.
