Thumbs up Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV $1294

We are closing on a new house in December and the wife wants the TV out of the reach of little hands, we are looking at the 42" Panasonic, Consumer Reports best buy.

Went online today and I saw this!

Panasonic 42" Widescreen Plasma HDTV w/ SD Card Slot, TH-42PX60U $1348

If you don't need the SD Card slot they have Panasonic 42" Widescreen Plasma HDTV w/ Built-In Digital Tuner, TH-42PX6U
for $1294

Both online only, and both out of stock. Was a decent deal though.

TX, that was a good deal but I'd stay away from Plasma. You will see a noticable degradation of the picture in a few months.

EDIT: Here is a deal on an LCD:

Polaroid 47" 1080p
The only bad thing about this TV is the contrast is only 700:1. I have not seen the picture in person so you may want to check it out first. This is a good brand of LCD and it is 1080p and a great price ($1,698.00)

The is the exact TV I bought yesterday. Except its selling here for $ 2499.99 Canadian. I got it for $2109 which I *thought* was a good deal.

Only watched for about an hour last night, and the HD cable doesn't get hooked up until Wednesday night, so I am anxiously waiting for that.

Great looking TV so far!.

I have always had great luck with Panasonic products and Consumer Reports has named this the bext 42 inch on the market for two years.

The LCD has somethings going for it and I know that Plamas have had issues in the past, but the picture seems better.

The picture will be better at first, unless you pay for a high-end LCD ($3K+) but within a year your plasma will have a worse picture than most LCDs on the market. This not only comes from consumer reports but also from personal experience.

I've heard that anything below 60 inches with 1080p is a waste of money.

I've heard also that Plasmas do wear out faster than LCDs.

When I am finally in the market for a TV, I'll be looking at Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung and maybe Sony (although I'm kinda pissed at Sony after that rootkit fiasco, but that's another story).

I have the exact same Panasonic and have owned it for about 18 months. The thing is turned on when my wife wakes up in the morning until I go to sleep at night. The picture quality is as good as the day I bought it.

Sorry, but I have a 50" Pioneer in the living room, that I have had for the last few years, and it looks as good today as it did the first day that I installed it. I also have a 42"Panasonic in the bedroom that I installed at least a year and a half ago, and this thing is on from 3 in the afternoon, untill 11 pm at night, every day, and it also looks great! and I am pretty critical about the quality.
Yes, technically, the plasma sets will start to degrade prior to the LCD's, but we are talking YEARS, not months...
Sorry that you had bad luck, but that is not typical.

I'd disagree with that, particularly if you are using the screen as a computer monitor as well. And if you have a big-ass screen like that why would you not?!?!

I have the Panasonic 52" LCD Projection HDTV and got it from circuit city last year. Only paid $1500.00. Never had any problems out of it and the picture is great. I have seen high end DLP's and only notice alittle difference from my LCD.
