Sorry for the delayed response, I must have missed your message...

Here is a forum with a step by step on doing this.

Wow, the Mio's a hell of a lot more hackable than I thought it was...

I'm having trouble seeing the point of the TomTom mod though, seeing as you have to buy the TomTom software. If I wanted it THAT bad, I would have bought a TomTom. Getting access to the shell and running WinCE apps looks like fun though...

Yes, I enjoy messing around with the hacks, but like you said, if I wanted a TomTom I would have bought one. But I did get a friend that has the software to allow me to install it just for kicks. It works GREAT, but I do prefer the Mio interface much better. I just wish Mio would get off their duff and provide us the latest US Maps. Fortunately for me the maps are very good for my area, but that isn't the case for all areas I travel, especially where there is newer road development in the last 2 years.

I'm gonna be playing around the next time I get a couple days off. Do they have a tutorial on just getting to the OS (without installing the TomTom software)?

No tutorial that I am aware of, but there are various web sites and forums dedicated to hacking the Mio. I sent you a link to one such forum. It is loaded with hacks and they will show you how to get to the OS without any harm just by pushing buttons when it starts.

Bumping this thread.

We're interested in getting a Garmin Nuvi or something similar. We have hear complaints about the volume being too low and hard to hear, so I was thinking about getting one with an FM transmitter. Would it be possible to have it go to the same frequency as my Sirius and only hear it when their is a voice, or would it constantly cause interference ?

You'd probably get a garbled mess if you tried to do that with an FM transmitter. I've never had a problem hearing my nuvi since it has a pretty good volume range. By this I mean with normal radio volume levels and/or normal conversation levels in the cabin. Of course if you crank your car stereo it will drown it out, but for normal operation i have never had an issue with hearing the nuvi voice.

Good to know.
We were trying out VZ Navigator yesterday on my cell and couldn't hear it at all with the window down. I found a gps forum and searched "Garmin Volume" and saw lots of complaints about the volume being too low.

Well, with the window down on the freeway you might have trouble hearing it. Whatever you buy, just make sure you get it from a place with a good return policy in case the volume isn't to your liking.

I have a Nuvi 680 and most of the time I have the volume turned down as it get's a little obnoxious and interrupts all the good music or Howard.

It's great when you have the voice cranked and it scares the crap out of you after a few quiet hours on the freeway and you hit your next turn...
