Default Question about Palm pilots.

So I know many of you use Palm pilots and other PDAs- I'm thinking about buying my g/f a Palm Tungsten for x-mas. It's like $200 ($100 cheaper than the XT) and seems like it would work. Any suggestions before I go??

Depending on what she needs it for here is a good Palm for under $100. The total is just over $78 if you use GCO (Google checkout). It is a Palm Z22

I only use a blackberry; it does everything I need it to do and I have my laptop for the rest.

Doesn't a blackberry also require a monthy phone fee? And I have to find something I can buy locally because I waiting too long to order online for christmas.

With Buy.com you should still be good with getting it for Christmas. Yes a blackberry requires a monthly phone fee but my company pays for the blackberry and cell phone usage.

I have the Tungsten E2 and it is a huge improvement over the E. Brighter color screen, (MUCH) longer battery life between charges, easy install/setup, bluetooth built in... sleek chrome design, can't go wrong for under 200 bones, I say.

Only advice I have if you go that route; accessory-wise - either get her (or encourage her to purchase herself) a hard case. The Tungsten E2 only comes with a flimsy faux-leather flip cover and the handheld gets banged and scratched up pretty quickly if you don't have a hard case that encloses it.

I know people who advise getting the clear adhesive screen protectors but I've never used one and my screen's never gotten scratched from the stylus.

I'm extremely familiar with the Palms having owned around 5 of them with the first one being a Handspring Visor. I bought my son (Junior in High School) a Tungsten e2 and it is very, very nice. However, personally I have a T|X and can tell you that it is very much worth the $100 extra.

Why is it worth $100?
1. 128Mb vs 32Mb
2. 802.11b WiFi & Bluetooth vs Bluetooth only
3. 320x480 resolution vs 320x320
4. 312Mhz processor speed vs 200Mhz

Don't get me wrong, the e2 is a very nice pda, but the T|X is well worth the extra $100. In fact, with the extra speed and wide-screen display, I can put DivX movies on an SD card and watch them at full resolution.

Oh, and the other thing I forgot to mention, and a nice feature... included software with the E2 is RealPlayer for PALM, which essentially allows the handheld to double as an MP3 player. MP3s need to be stored on an SD card, so you'll need one of those too if you think she'll use RealPlayer.

It really all depends on what you will use it for I guess. If you just want something to store contacts and a calendar then the Z22 is great. If you want something to double as an MP3 player this will not work because of the small storage space. From what I have read the TX is one of the best out on the market but not everybody needs all of that functionality.

So, I went with the Tungsten but, here's what I got.... again though, I tend to get good deals from sales people. I'm all about talking up a sales person and seeing what kind of employee discounts they can hook me up with... here's what I got:

Circuit City costs:
Tungsten Palm plus accessories kit: $199
1 GB memory: $50
Metal case: $40
Circuit City 2 year warranty: $40
... then sales tax on top.

I paid, including the tax, $280 cash out the door.

The reason I didn't go with the TX is because the 128 MB wasn't going to cut it for music so I knew I would have to spend another $50 on top of that for memory.

Nice deal. She'll be happy.

That'd be a hell of a lot of cash to have on hand! Smoozing sales people never helps if you're financing.

Is it pretty easy to connect and transfer things back/forth from a PC? I'm thinking she'll want to keep some notes on it but it's a lot easier to use a keyboard to type.
