It's as good as fact to me until shown otherwise since I'm going on a Merril Lynch research report. I would trust that more than Ziggy who goes out of his way to present XM in the best possible light.

From a deepthroat source, XM has over 500,000 subs through the GM freebie program that lasts 3 months to a year. A General Manager of Clear Channel Communications was heard saying that XM will be increasing their commercials per hour and that they were counting GM subs before the vehicle was sold.

ML upped their take rate on XM/GM to 87%. I ask how, when many freebie subs still have over 1/2 year to decided to take or not?

To each his own, they may count the subs, I don't know and quite frankly think it makes little difference. The fact is they are growing at a substancial rate over SIRIUS. That you don't have to read a report on or try to figure out, its plain as day. By years end, they will probably have a million more subscribers than SIRIUS regardless of where the numbers come from or if the GM Promo's are included.

What is so strange to me though is that even though it seems they are doing this hocus pocus on the numbers, most folks I know feel that SIRIUS is the one to watch on their numbers. I just wish SIRIUS would have given their numbers and quit playing this cat and mouse game with these conference calls. They wait all that time give the 2nd quarter numbers and then not state what the numbers are to date. Its just crazy!

While XM did report their quarterly numbers promptly, I don't think they update them as a rule during the conference call. In this case they probably hope to hit 1million before the conference call. I'm sure that will be an event that they will report, and then they will probably have a similar press release, "XM Has over 1Million Subscribers, while Sirius has only 105,000"

Actually Manco, they do report their current numbers when they have their conference call, because they have already released the quarterly numbers previously. This is a well known fact. Its why the media always has better numbers for XM vs SIRIUS.

Are you sure?

"On July 1, 2003, the company announced it had a total of 692,253 subscribers after adding more than 209,000 subscribers in the second quarter."

The 692k is the number I remember in the press all quarter long. What was the number they reported during the CC, do you recall?

Sirius Rich -- what you heard is not close to the truth. GM just rolled off the lines a few weeks ago their 500,000 car with XM installed -- those are NOT sold cars (GM doesn't sell cars that quickly). Look at the revenue -- your statement about 500,000 freebies would not support it.

I also don't see XM increasing beyond the 6 minutes that they have already committed too previously. Right now on most streams its about 1 to 2 minutes per hour. So, they may increase it to the 6 minutes, but never beyond that. Sometimes in off peak hours the commercials are even less then this.

It does when XM counts subs before the GM and Honda cars are sold!

Sirius_Rich - Do the math -- look at XM's monthly revenue from subs -- you will see that if you took out the 500,000 non paying subs you claim, the math does not work. Also, go back and look at the sub count PRIOR to the GM installs -- they exceed the difference between the 929,000 and the 500,000 freebies.

Becareful of "deepthroat" info -- it will get you into trouble.
