Default Stern VOD and impact on Sirius?

See http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=104507.

The money quote:

According to TV Barn, roughly 40 to 50 percent of cable customers have On Demand access, which adds up to around 50 million households that will have access to Stern's show. By completely heading to subscription services for radio and television, Stern will be free of censors and able to say and, more importantly for the pixilated challenged, show what he pleases during his programs.

If Stern can be seen, what impact do you think this could have on the projections for new subscribers to Sirius? I am not too familiar with Stern's shows- how much is "eye candy?" Why didn't Sirius get an exclusive for the price they paid?

It is a good question. If Stern is available on VOD and on Sirius, will that disuade people from getting sat radio? I think it will have some impact, but you have to hope that people want Sirius for MORE than just Stern. IF they do, they will get it and enjoy VOD; if all they want is Stern, then VOD could be an issue.

Good points and one of the reasons IMO that Sirius paid way too much for Stern. I don't think he will pay off with huge Sub gains like previously expected.

VOD $3.95 a viewing and its not even the entire show it is just part of it.

VOD not going to be a factor.

Where did you get the pricing information and learn that it wouldn't be the whole show?

At what price do you think that it would be a significant factor?

EDIT: Here's a link to an article in Variety about the proposed VOD service. (Sorry---don't know how long the link will be good.) The article discusses a proposed service that offers uncensored video of Stern's show for $10/mth. The show will be 60-90 minutes edited from Stern's previous day's show.

I was wrong I got bad information sorry about that.

I think the way they have this set up may affect sirius subs a little. That makes me mad he would do that when he is all talking up sirius and trying to make sirius become bigger than xm. That is just going to hurt sirius in the long run. Good job howard.

The important info:

In Demand, the dominant U.S. distributor of pay-per-view movies and events, will offer the Stern show to cable networks via subscription video-on-demand. SVOD is a platform that requires people to subscribe to a digital cable box and in this case pay $10 extra each month to get the standalone channel that carries Stern.

At $10 per month, this is less than Stern fans would pay sirius if they just want Stern. But, the show will be delayed one-day and condensed from 4 hours to 90 minutes On Demand. But, of course, a picture is worth 1000 words, especially when it is "lesbians kissing."

My initial thoughts is that this will not hurt sirius too greatly, that folks listen to Stern at work or on the road and they will need sirius for this. They may get the special VOD events.

I for one don't really care if Stern brings tons of subs with him. If people sign up for Sirius, it will be because of the whole package. The service is just awesome. I'll be happy if he can pay for his own contract in subs. Which, I think he will. Anything more than 1 million added subs from Stern is gravy.

This should complement Sirius as it raises awareness of the show on Sirius, and for those that are introduced through the TV program, when they eventually get satellite radio (as we know most will over time), the vast majority will choose Sirius. So this is good news for Sirius imo.

The BIG ???? Is, will Sirius get a piece of that 10.00 a month that VOD will charge. I would say yes if they have exclusive rights to the HS show on sirius. You would think they do for 500 mil. So I really don't think Mel & Sirius are sleeping on their 500 million dollars investment with this VOD deal. Thoughts???

I've seen several articles on the deal and they all describe In Demand paying Stern. I haven't seen a single thing that would suggest that Sirius is getting a piece of the pie.

VOD with Stern will be another avenue for promoting the Sirius Stern show -- and Sirius in general. For commuters that listen to Stern in the AM, they will have to wait to see the Stern show later in the day, or whenver it is broadcast. Plus who says Stern won't be available on Sirius video? Overall, it is a postive for Sirius.

Also, although we don't yet know the details, its reasonable to assume that Sirius will get some compensation for the Stern show on VOD, since its taped in their studios.

Unless Sirius is getting a cut of that 10.00 then this was a VARY BAD MOVE.

Sorry but giving up exclusive rights? For TV just for pormotional sake?

BAD BAD BAD

Was that supposed to be "promotional" or something starting with "porn"?
