Default Oprah to Sirius?

From New York Post...

OPRAH, MARTHA TO DISH
By TIM ARANGO
September 4, 2005 -- MARTHA and Oprah may soon be under the same roof.

Sirius Satellite Radio and its entertainment boss Scott Greenstein are in discussions about a pact that would bring Oprah Winfrey to Sirius alongside Martha Stewart on Sirius' high-profile entertainment lineup, a source told On the Money.

A Sirius spokesman declined comment.

Sirius hasn't been shy about shelling out the big bucks as it fights rival XM in a high-stakes battle for exclusive content deals, and an Oprah deal is not likely to come cheap.

This would be great if it were true, I don't think that XM could afford to loose Oprah.

This would be really good for Sirius. She has an absolutely HUGE following, and would be the crown jewel of Sirius' womens programming. I just hope they don't pay to much.

I'm sure she will be on Sat radio soon, but if Sirius gets her.. I'm sure she would NOT be cheep.. It would be big press for Sirius... I do know for a fact that XM was talking to the big O... so.. I have been on the phone all morning about this.. and no one is talking..

I agree....I think we are looking at the same position XM found itself in with Sports programming....they had no choice but to get MLB in response to Sirius' sports acquisitions...and again they find themselves in a similar situation with Oprah....

I see this playing out in two ways....1 is Sirius gets Oprah....2 is Sirius drives the price up so high that XM pays a ridiculous premium for Oprah

Don't get me wrong, Oprah's programming won't come cheap...but she has the ability to bring in millions of subscribers.

im sure if she does sign with either company she will be overpaid..... I'd have to imagine that oprahs empire is larger then sterns and her potential to attract more subs is larger as well.

What I read in the past, I saw XM was looking to get her. But it will be even better if she does come to Sirius! I bet where ever she goes Dr. Phil tags along. But right now Sirius is in the lead with women programming! But if I have to make a guess on how much money she her contract would be, it probably will be bigger then Howard Stern contract of $500 Million for 5 years!

I'm not totally convinced of this, but I'm wondering what her radio appeal would be compared to on TV. Radio is a different animal than TV, and Martha Stewart will probably have some issues with this as well.

I hope Sirius does get her, because this would tilt the scales even more in Sirius's direction.

the new york post is notorious for starting up rumors or stirring the pot in one way or another.....( just ask any yankee or mets fans) so we all need to take this with a grain of salt until some other reliable sources start talking about it or even better until a deal is signed....

This contract would not be bigger than Howard Stern's. Howard will be exclusively on Sirius, cant be heard anywhere else, while Oprah would still have her television show I would assume.

Don't forget about Stern's On-Demand deal to televise his radio show...

Maybe, maybe not. Oprah certainly is capable of commanding the bigger contract based on her overall visibility, popularity, and media clout.

I personally hope that Sirius just drives the price of Oprah up. Xm is in the same situtation with women programming as it was with Sports, they need to get Oprah period. Sirius should spend its money on getting Ford to put Sirius as standard or a big sale on tuners or the new s50.

Why is it so essential for XM to get Oprah? They're doing just fine in the teeth of Sirius's major talent and programming acquisitions, what makes Oprah so vital?

If Sirius gets her it would be after CES 2006 as the programming lineup has been set for 9/29 and they would have to do some channel shuffling in the Womens category as there are no open channel numbers from Martha/Cosmo/Lime (Which is really not a womens channel)
