Default XM passes 5 mil

Tuesday September 27, 7:05 am ET
By Michael Baron

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- XM Satellite Radio Tuesday said it's surpassed the five million subscriber mark. The Washington, D.C.-based XM added that it's on track to have more than six million subscribers by the end of the year. "With the winning combination of outstanding new channels and breakthrough products in advance of the holiday season, XM is poised for record growth during the fourth quarter," said Hugh Panero, the company's president and CEO. The stock closed Monday at $33.69, down 2.2%.

With these new sub announcements, new product offerings, lower price points for products, low SAC....it does feel like XM is continuing to outpace Sirius despite Stern's move to Sirius in Jan.

It's making me a little nervous.

In my experience those expecting a magic bullet for their stock (in this case Stern) are often disappointed as most times people hype the potential well beyond what really does happen.

I love Sirius and I want them to succeed but I'm not sure their spending spree is going to pay off with the subs peopple are expecting.

Congrats to XM!

I honestly believe that XM is performing so well because they have LIVE portables. I think that is probably the only reason Sirius isn't really "gaining" on them, but as long as they aren't loosing ground it is fine.

Lets see where we stand 1 year from now to gauge the reception of Howard, Martha, and anything else Sirius has up their sleeve. Sirius has always been behind, and in my opinion, they are not losing ground, in fact, they are gaining ground in sub counts.....SAC and CFBE may be a different story. I just picked up many more options for JAN 2008, hoping for a nice $12-15 price at that time.

Yes that is helping, but what is really keeping them in the lead is GM and Honda Factory installs. The retail market share is much closer than the OEM market share at this moment in time. I fully expect Sirius to beat XM in retail market share in the 4th quarter and 1st quarter of next year as the Stern crowd moves over.

good news for satellite radio. this is a major milestone for xm and satellite radio. sirius will have its turn in the sun. the race for subs in satellite radio is like a baseball game and this game may be the 3rd inning. both companies will start turning a profit late 2006.

Sirius continues to increase its subscriber market share.

At the end of 2004, they had 26% of all sat radio subscribers. By the end of this year, they are expected to have at least 33%.

Look for Sirius to have at least 40% by end of year 06, and probably more.

Sirius will start making major gains when Stern comes on board, and Ford OEM sales start to snowball.

The Starmate Replay should be a very good seller, and I predict the S50 will sell better than its detractors claim. I think it's clearly a more impressive unit than XM's NeXus, from both a technological and looks standpoint.

I'm betting that some of Sirius' hardware partners will be introducing true live portables in the near future. When that happens, XM better look out.

I think it is great that they surpassed 5 million subs and are expecting to meet 6 million by years end, but why in the world would they announce it NOW, 4 dyas before the end of the quarter??? Seems a bit strange to me, especially since they said that it happened recently, not giving a specific date......

Wow 5 Million for XM, but it will be fantastic by end of the year, when both companies will be near probably the 10 Million mark?
