Default XM adds 617,000 new subs in 3rd qrtr

XM Satellite Radio Increases Lead with More Than 617,000 New Net Subscribers During Third Quarter of 2005
Monday October 3, 10:20 am ET

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: XMSR - News), the nation's leading provider of satellite radio, today announced it added more than 617,000 new net subscribers during the third quarter of 2005 for a total of more than 5.03 million subscribers. This subscriber gain represents a 48 percent increase in new net subscribers compared to the third quarter of 2004, when XM added more than 415,000 new net subscribers.

"This continues to be a phenomenal year for XM Satellite Radio, with more than 1.8 million new net subscribers since the beginning of 2005," said Hugh Panero, President and CEO, XM Satellite Radio. "During the third quarter, we increased our lead as the number-one satellite radio company by topping five million subscribers, and we expect to surpass six million by the end of the year. This was our best third quarter ever, and with a tremendous line-up of new products and programming choices, we expect the fourth quarter to be the most successful in the history of our company."

Panero recently celebrated XM's five-million-subscriber milestone by opening the NASDAQ Stock Market in New York with Grammy-winning musical artist and actor Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, who will host an exclusive XM show starting in January. During the quarter General Motors and XM also celebrated the three millionth GM vehicle with factory-installed XM Satellite Radio.

XM's exclusive satellite radio coverage of Major League Baseball shifts into high gear this week with live play-by-play coverage of post-season action, starting Tuesday with the San Diego Padres vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at 1pm ET (XM Channel 183), the Boston Red Sox vs. the Chicago White Sox at 4pm ET (XM Channels 176 and 190) and the New York Yankees vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 7pm ET (XM Channels 177 and 190).

Today also marks the debut of "Take Five," the XM talk radio channel aimed at women, featuring satellite radio broadcasts of high-profile programs such as "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." This Wednesday, XM will begin carrying National Hockey League games as part of a ten-year agreement with the NHL.

These are VERY impressive numbers for a normally lackluster 3rd quarter for XM--Im looking out for Sirius 3rd quarter and want to compare to last years 415k for XM as sirius is more then a year behind XM in their existance and that would indicate if their rate of growth is higher or lower--My gut is telling me sirius doesnt have 415,000 this quarter but i hope im wrong

i hate to say it, but i think Sirius lost market share in the 3rd quarter...we will see in another month since sirius tends to hold numbers until their CC.

They just might have...

I doubt Sirius is gonna have 415k + subs in the 3rd... My high guess is 360K net, if that even. I hope they surprise me.

can anyone figure out what they had at the end of LAST quarter, then take into account when they made their 2.1 million announcement and figure a average monthy sub estimate to come up with this quarters?

There's no way Sirius lost market share this quarter, they held at the worst.

i think they might have lost market share as there were rebates on XM equipment and also the GM employee pricing was a major hit but who knows

This seems a little fishy to me. After going, on average, 3500/day for the first 75 or so days, they somehow get ~6500/day for the last 15 days!!!

I think this is the shady practice of including cars on the lot. The majority of 2006 models get delivered in September.

It would really be interesting to compare marketshare if Sirius separated OEM, trial, retail subs like XM.

Yea but dude, it doesnt work like that. Subs added month to month vary. Lets say they added 2k per day, 1 month, 4k avg, 2nd month, and 6k a day in sept. You still get 360k. Right now subs should be increasing day by day by a nice margin.

Dude, it is strange that the average nearly doubled. I know it varies day to day, thus the use of an average. This still doesn't change the fact that the majority of 2006 models are delivered in September. Any jump like that should be questioned. There was no holiday, no hardware giveaway, nothing really out of the ordinary.

And if you think that the additions really grow like that, you are mistaken. They grow around special events and/or promotions. They do grow gradually as they get more exposure, but they do not double from month to month.
