SIRIUS Satellite Radio Doubles its Net Subscriber Additions in the
Third Quarter 2005

- Net Subscriber Additions of Over 359,000 Reflect a 97% Increase From
Year-Ago Quarter - More Than One Million Subscribers Added in First
Nine Months of the Year - Company Continues to Gain Market Share

NEW YORK, Oct 04, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- SIRIUS
Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today announced it added more than 359,000
new net subscribers during the third quarter of 2005, reflecting
continued strong demand for its service. The third quarter net subscriber
gain represents a 97% increase in net subscribers over year-ago quarter
net additions of approximately 182,000. SIRIUS ended the quarter with
over 2.17 million subscribers.

"We continued to experience strong subscriber growth during the third
quarter, which was the best third quarter in our history, and increased
our market share from the year-ago quarter by more than 20%. With the
traditionally heavy holiday selling period coming up, we fully expect
demand for our service to accelerate significantly through the remainder
of the year," said Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS. "With the recent
introduction of our new programming line-up, which will include Martha
Stewart Living Radio later this year and Howard Stern in January 2006, we are
ushering-in an exciting new chapter in satellite radio. Plus, we are
launching a new generation of products this fall that will complement our
unique mix of content and make it very affordable for consumers to
subscribe to SIRIUS."

SIRIUS expects to reach three million subscribers by the end of 2005.

I think so. The 4th quarter is always a good couple of months for service providers like XM and Sirius. And if sirius continues on the same path that they did this past quarter (almost doubling the amount of subscribers from a year ago) they should be real close. Not to mention, you also have howard that might bring in artificially higher numbers.

So Sirius has to double last years numbers, just to reach the target. Hope Sterns Fans step-up.

This year Sirius will have Ford factory installs in the 4th quarter, plus other OEMs continuing to ramp up (compared with last year). Also you've got over all growth in the sector (more awareness). With all that, probably just need 400,000 - 500,000 Stern fans to go over 3 million.

Alnother way to look at it, the last 15 days Sirius got 6500 subs a day -- that rate over 90 days is 585,000, and its still 6 weeks away from the Christmas buying season and 3 months from Stern.

3 million should not be a problem.

Not quite double. But close. I think they can do it. They had a strong third quarter compared to last year. And all this news of more subscribers helps to build momentum. I would there is a possiblity of hitting 1 million new subscriber additions for the quarter. Although that wont happen until late due to christmas bringing in a lot of them.

They need to have the radios on the shelves to make this happen.

I was checking out the XM boards about the Sirius numbers. Putting aside the bias over there, there is an interesting comment that I would lilke to know the answer to -- keep in mind, both "sides" seem to question the other's sub counting methodology. The issue is whether Sirius counts as subscribers the unsold cars on lots containing sat radios. They point out over there that the numbers for the last 2 weeks were incredibly high, which coincided with the delivery of 2006 cars. Anyone know the poop on this?

I'd find it difficult to believe that Sirius would count car radios as "subscribers," if they did that, then they could count all of the radios sitting on shelves in Best Buy's, Circuit City's, Radio Shacks, and so on.

Since a car can't subscribe itself to anything, I'd discount this, as you say, biased, reasoning. (Besides, they don't manufacture all of the 2006 models in a single week, or month, anyway.)

It would seem the Sirius subscriber base is indeed growing fast ("incredibly high") and the "delivery" of 2006 cars is not related, I feel. Maybe my reasoning is irrational, but counting cars seems kinda "out there" to me.

Unless there's serious (no pun intended) fraud going on at Sirius HQ, then I'd tend belive the numbers of subscribers (not radios sitting in cars) that Sirius claims. Maybe I'm niave, but without a look at their books, I've no recourse but to trust the claim. Anything else is pure speculation, wild guesses, or perhaps, just perhaps, the XMers are just bummed to see the Sirius subscriber base growing so fast., and are looking for some other reason than reality...

Maybe one day Serius will have the "#1" banner on their page, and you won't see it on XMs page. ;-)
