Post Siruis’ Karmazin Hints At Possible Merger With XM

Barron's is reporting the following:

"Here’s an excerpt from a Smart Money interview with Karmazin that was posted earlier today:

Where are you with a possible merger with XM?

I’m really not allowed to say. I have focused my entire career on shareholder value and wealth creation. Often mergers allow for that. I combined my radio company with CBS, and I combined CBS with Viacom.

What was XM’s reaction to your proposition?

“I’m dreaming” is their quote. But before they said that, both stocks went up. So I guess investors think [a merger] could be interesting.

Have you tried flowers?

I personally believe regulatory agencies are not a problem. If there’s an iPod with terrestrial radio, it’s hard to believe government is worried about two satellite radio companies combining. "

A merger would be bad for us customers. Competition breeds better product.

If XM and SIRIUS merged, I could see World Space coming to the United States.

That's interesting, I never even heard of them. Are there any other satellite radio services in the world?

If I remember correctly World space has a strange sat coverage. I believe they have 3 sats that cover a HUGE part of the world. Could have also dreamed this but I don't think so.

Default merger

Just checked out worldspace online and it says that their monthly sub rate is 9.99, which use to be around XM's back when. If the merge were to go through, I would hope that it would be because Worldspace is coming to the U.S and they'd better raise that subscription fee as well because I know an XM/Sirius merge would raise our monthly cost. I just wouldn't want worldspace to remain 9.99 while we would possibly end up paying 19.99. Do you all know what I mean? Also, I wonder what would happen regarding xm and sirius equipment and how the channels would be configured if a possible merge were to occur.

Yea I saw that website too...I think you can only get the sgnal in africa....last I heard they were having money troubles.

Interestingly....I also saw that initially there were 4 liscences given out to operate satrad in the US. XM was first then SIRIUS. They came up with the start up money(billions)
So if other companies come up with the dough there could be 2 more satrad options for us all!

What I think would happen is that they'd consolidate their stations and offer a regular and a premium service just like cable has standard and HiDef options.

I'd be ALL OVER THAT. NOW, MP3 quality is NOT "HiDef". I'm talking REAL CYMBAL CRASHES with NO HINT OF COMPRESSION.

I think Mel started talks in June-July and got a no from XMSR in October. thereby the kick ass talk.

Now I see it as where he's a little pissed, wants investors to pressure XM's BOD AND creates a tiny element of doubt for anyone going to the store to buy a satrad gift for Christmas.

I'll tell you, he's a calucalted Dude. Don't underestimate the fact that this came out on Black Friday. It was not random.

I suspect he'll continue to slug away at buying them by chrushing XM ( or trying too ) at each quarter.

.50 says it will come to pass.

Does anyone think that compitition from ipod and hdradio will help spur this merger?
This hd radio thing has got a lot advertising behind it.
There could be an xm sirius merger to create an elite satrad company then a liscence could be issued to a smaller company(much like sirius used to be) and hence the compitition could be doubled against ipod....hd?

I kind of doubt that thats possible. Worldspace is still losing a ton of money its like at 80% loss for the past 25 months. They are also projected to run out of money sometime in 07.

To me it would be rather stupid as eventually one standard would have to be trashed. Even cases where different technologies have merged (sprint nextel) they still have a plan to eventually have one standard. I can only see it happening if one is on the verge of bankrupcy.

Worldspace is pretty much screwed.

Anyways, if sounds like if XM wanted to they'd atleast try to merge. Hopefully they don't though.
