Default Flat-screen TV sales eclipse pay radio

Flat-screen TV sales eclipse pay radio
Dec. 5, 2006. 01:00 AM

Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., operator of the second-largest U.S. pay-radio service, lowered its year-end subscriber forecast by as much as 6.3 per cent yesterday after holiday shoppers snubbed pay radios for other high-end electronics.

Subscribers at year-end will be 5.9 million to 6.1 million, below the 6.3 million the company predicted on Nov. 8, New York-based Sirius said.

Sales since the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend "have not been at the pace we had anticipated," Sirius said. Consumer focus on flat-screen TVs has eclipsed some of the demand for satellite radio from Sirius and its larger rival, XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Thomas Eagan said.

XM, based in Washington, has cut subscriber estimates twice this year. On Nov. 6, the company narrowed its subscriber forecast to a range of 7.7 million to 7.9 million.

Sirius reiterated its forecast of positive free cash flow this quarter and didn't change its prediction of $615 million (U.S.) in annual revenue.

It's a bogus comparison.

HDTV's are involved in a price war. Article.

If so, pent up demand for flat-screen TV's may have been unleashed on Black Friday. That wouldn't necessarily mean a reduced demand for satellite radio, but a rush to take advantage of a perceived bargain. People with limited disposable income may have chosen to delay purchase of Sirius or XM, thinking the price wouldn't change greatly between now and year-end.

I'd say, PS3/NINTENDO WII are eating into the sales more than anything. I mean DAM.

You could very well be correct, rt.

Still, it means that WII's, PS3's, and LCDTV's are attractive as impulse purchases, while satrad is still a popular considered, deliberate purchase.

Have you noticed how everything requires other purchases or spending? The game consoles need... games? Yep! HDTV's need upgraded receivers and players, cables and subscriptions. Satrad, of course, requires subs.

I hope I don't get anything good for Christmas. I don't think I can afford it!

EXACTLY. This is the 2nd year I WILL NOT BUY A SAT RADIO as a present for the old people. I'm just not interested in the COMMITTMENT...tech support, phone calls (WHAT THE HELL IS PSRAM ERROR???? WHY DOESN'T IT TUNE IN???)

Now that the flat screens are under a $1000 they are going to be HUGE but you can't deny that between Sat radio for $200 OR Nintendo WII for about the same price, Nintendo gets the money. (especially since I have the Sirius) Frig Playstation. ANYONE still buying based on processing power needs to get out of 1991 and wake the hell up.

If you buy a satrad for someone who isn't technically saavy, YOU WILL be their first call made. If you have a problem with that, I recommend a nice tea cozy. Even Mom can figure out how to work that.
