Default Where they both went wrong.

Hindsight is wonderful, and if the management of either company would have considered the business models of other subscription models, and been more creative in the application of the discipline, their world ( and ours ) would be much happier.

1. Consider how things might be different IF Satrad was launched in an ala carte mode. Consider if maybe 10 music slots were offered for $4.99 per month ( or even FREE ) all the way to 19.99 for fully loaded New, Talk, Music, Sports and Weather was offered. How many people would have subscribed and upgraded just as is done with Sat TV ? ...What would this have done for the word of mouth penetration ? If you want to proliferate a technology, you must bring the price points in line with the consumer. This wasn't done and the growth rate has suffered for it.

My point is, the cost of this service has not been reflected by the content addition. There is no pricing power, and thereby the offering need to reflect their intrinsic value. If you can't get more for more, give less for the same.

2. Subscriptions in General. Copious surveys have shown that people are simply burned out on subscriptions. Would the ipod have thrived IF there was a monthly fee to download ...of course not. BUT people will spend more per month down loading 25 songs at 1.00 each.

OEM installs need to be sold with a 4 year subscription. People are more prone to pay you 600.00 for a satrad radio that's good for four years than they are to pay for individual pieces of subscription and radio. This concept is further advantageous ( by lowering initial costs ) when the ala carte concept of $4.99 is applied.

3. Dual units.

Both Sirius and XM have done themselves a disservice IMHO by not manufacturing and selling a dual unit in all OEM and retail units. How many people would subscribe to both services...I suspect quite a few. Further, it reduces the cost of each unit, for both companies.

There are many things that can be nit picked in these observations, but the reality of where we are today is not bright. Something went wrong with the marketing of this technology as well as the spending. XM and SIRI need to be more creative and nimble.

altho al a carte sounds good, I would imagine it would create a lot of administrative overhead as well as the possible problem and would the hardware support such parameters, I don't know. At best they would've done tiered levels and we've seen how that works out with cable or SatTV, all the channels you want would be in the top tier. i like getting everything at one price, especially since different things appeal to different subscribers.

As for the dual hardware platform, I believe the technology is still being worked out. Thinking it up and implementing it are two very different things... I think there are intrinsic differences in the two formats and it will take some doing to get both technologies into one platform that will be cheaper. I also think that either company needs to prove that they can survive on the subscription model before they hope or plan for people getting dual subs.

Like anything there's many reasons for a failure, or a success. IMO though XM and Sirius biggest boo boo was spending money they didn't have like drunken sailors. They should have spent wisely, stayed small and nimble and when they were close to or at profitability then they could have spent big money on sports, talk, etc..

Both companies remind me so much of the dot com companies of the late 90's it's scary. And 98% of them failed, so if I'm right things don't look good for XM and Sirius.

I think it would help both XM and Sirius if they get radio's that can play both services. I have also talked to people who still don't know anything about satellite radio or never heard of it. IMO there can be A potential for many more subscribers for both companies. I've had 5 people at work sign up for either XM or Sirius after I showed them my XM Roady2. I just activated A Sirius Xact Visor unit friday and plan to show off that at work also.

I have always thought both XM and Sirius have A quality service. They beat the hell out of AM/FM. I think if they both find A better way to promote their product you'd have more subscribers.

I'll agree with freely spending cash... will take longer to get profitable. We'll get there in time, not worried
