Default WTD 2006 Week 15 - 63 Outlaw Country

Created by "Little Steven" Van Zandt, Outlaw Country is a sanctuary for the freaks, misfits, outcasts, rebels and renegades of country music. Tune in every weekday to hear the rantings of Mojo Nixon, "The Loon in the Afternoon."

What we play: Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Emmylou Harris, Dale Watson, Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, Dwight Yoakam, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Steve Earle, and all three generations of Hank Williams!

Tony Joe White Uncovered
Wed 9/20 11:00 am ET
With a voice deeper than a sink hole, perennial bayou boy Tony Joe White has been making funky Cajun swamp rock for nearly four decades. The "Swamp Fox" hit the Top Ten himself with "Polk Salad Annie" in 1969 and his classic, much-covered "Rainy Night in Georgia" has just been nominated for the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame. White drops in on DJ RigRocker to discuss his new CD, Uncovered, which features guest turns from fellow guitar heroes Eric Clapton, J.J. Cale and Mark Knopfler, and one of the last songs Waylon Jennings ever recorded.

Rebroadcast: Fri., Sept. 22nd @ 8 am ET.

Todd Snider: The Tipsy Gypsy Hour
Fri 9/22 8:00 pm ET
“Tipsy Gypsy” songman Todd Snider kicks off his shoes and cracks a few cold ones to celebrate the release of his acclaimed new album The Devil You Know (New Door) with a freewheelin’ takeover of Outlaw Country. The merry prankster will play guest DJ for one-hour of his favorite Outlaws like Billy Joe Shaver, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker and Bob Dylan. He’ll also tell some of the sordid uncensored stories behind his own killer tunes.

Rebroadcast: Sat., Sept. 23rd @ 10 pm ET; Sat., Sept. 30th @ 12 am ET; Sun., Oct. 1st @ 1 am ET.

Billy Joe Shaver
Mon 9/25 9:00 pm ET
They don't make honky tonk heroes like Billy Joe Shaver anymore. The Corsicana, TX native who has written chestnuts like "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal" and "I've Been to Georgia on a Fast Train" is still cookin' at age 65 with his latest CD, The Real Deal, a tribute disc that he plays on, and a film about his thorny life. Ride shotgun with Highway Hellion Meredith Ochs and Billy Joe as they talk about his recent induction into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, stumping for his good friend and Texas Gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman, his appearance on 60 Minutes and the true story behind Honky Tonk Heroes, the Shaver-penned, Waylon Jennings-recorded album considered by many to be the first outlaw country album.

Rebroadcast: Tues., Sept. 26th @ 11 pm ET.

Fred’s Trailer Park Bash
Saturdays 6 am - 10 am ET
Replays Sundays 10 am - 2 pm ET and Mondays 12 am - 4 am ET

Broadcasting from the White Trash Cafe in Tucson, Arizona, Fred Imus (brother of legendary DJ Don Imus) serves up heaping helpings of greasy pick-up truck honky tonk with a side of grits. If you like your country Southern fried in a doublewide, try Fred's Trailer Park Bash.

Mojo Nixon’s "The Loon in the Afternoon" & Saturday Night Demolition Derby
Weekdays 4 pm ET
Saturdays 10 pm ET

It's a redneck rampage with the irrepressible roots rock wildman Mojo Nixon, author of such enduring classics as "Elvis is Everywhere" and "Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child," broadcasting from his "Shack by the Sea" in Coronado, Ca. Tune in every weekday from 4-8 pm ET and Saturday nights for back-to-back editions of his "Saturday Night Demolition Derby," an uncensored thrill-ride that celebrates the unheard demented psychotic underbelly of the American dream.

I do enjoy most country music, but some reason I never tune into Outlaw Country for some reason, I mainly listen to New and Prime Country. But listening to it yesterday, I enjoy it some of the songs and will be tuning back in soon.

As 'Wolf' said, I tend to gravitate more toward the mainstream (New/Prime) country channels. I gave Outlaw a listen, and it wasn't too bad. Not something I would frequent, but for an occasional listen it's not too bad. Every once in a while, I'll pop in to see what they're doing...which is more than I would have done in the past.

I'm enjoying WTD.

I'm not a fan of country music, so I'll probably not be returning to Outlaw Country. However, I do have respect for this channel. It feels to me like authentic Country & Western music, more so (to me) than the stuff coming out of Nashville these last 10 - 15 years. But, the only music I seem to enjoy here is when they venture into rock, like the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers or Bob Dylan.

I enjoy Outlaw Country. It looks like Sirius has made an effort to improve this channel by not playing as much rock music. Most of the rock music I heard was 50's era rockabilly which I think crosses over as country fairly well.

I like to jump around Sirius' country streams, but Outlaw gets a preset because they don't play any of the Nashville ballads that I dislike. I listen several times a week and I'll be back frequently.

I also like that they're playing some of the alternative country that X Country on XM does such a great job. I'd love to have an alt. country station as well as a Texas country station.

I gave Outlaw another hour, and it's growing on me. I am rather surprised at the broad range of music they play. There can be a bit too much chatter every now and then, but I'm enjoying the music.

I prefer Roadhouse to this channel. While there are some fun country songs here, I don't really like the overall "tongue in cheek" attitude to this channel, for some reason. A lot of the songs qualify as novelty songs. It's worth tuning in every now and then, but not too frequently for me.

Thumbs up

I listened to this channel this past weekend. On Friday afternoon I listened to Mojo Nixon. Not a bad show.

On Saturday Morning, I tuned in and had the misfortune of hearing Fred Imus' Show. I got to hear nonsense talk and dumb jokes.

A baby seal walks into a bar. The bartender asks the baby seal what he wants to drink. The baby seal replies, "Anything but Canadian Club"

Get it?...

And what's with the woman on his show that talks like Gopher from Winnie the Pooh? Someone please fit that woman for a retainer!

All in all, it's a good channel. I'll check out Mojo again...

Yeah, these are pretty much my thoughts. It's a fun channel to listen to occasionally as a goof, but not something I'd listen to regularly or for an extended period.

Outlaw used to be interesting when it played Americana Country, now it just seems like more of the same, always trying to be naughty, that got old real fast. I rarely listen any more. I listen to my CD's now more than ever.

Outlaw Country changed the way I viewed country music and I discovered new artists that I would have NEVER EVER heard on old-fashioned radio or the other mainstream country channels. Outlaw Country isn't for everyone. Its for folks who like rock and country from blues to funky. If Garth Brooks and Rascal Flatts are more to one's liking, Sirius has a channel for that stuff too ... its called Prime Country.

One artist that Sirius Outlaw Country is responsible for exposing me to is Shooter Jennings. I had never heard of him before listening to OC. Since I bought my first Sirius radio in 2004, I have become a diehard Shooter Jennings fan. I have attended two of his concerts in Raleigh and listen to his show, Electric Rodeo, every Saturday. Sirius even broadcast a couple of his concerts this year from New York City and Sturgis.

Outlaw County is simply high quality radio. I love it! I can honestly say that Sirius Satellite Radio and Outlaw County have improved my quality of life while expanding my musical horizons! I just can't say enough good things about Outlaw Country!

Wow. What a pleasant surprise Outlaw Country was for me. I can't listen to country music. I just can't get into it at all. Therefore, I wasn't looking forward to this one. However, I was very surprised at the type of music that they played here. I loved the fact that I heard some Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc. Now maybe the only reason why I liked this station is because it crossed over to this format, however, I can't lie, it kept my interest. And even those "country" songs, I enjoyed. Plus, no Garth Brooks or Toby Keith or whatever.

I can honestly say, I will be back to Outlaw Country and will make it a preset. I enjoy it!

Speaking of Shooter Jennings, last night i was listening to Outlaw Country at home and heard a song. I had to go over to my radio to see who sang it, as I was really impressed with the voice. It was...Shooter Jennings.
